It does so much to help them understand the concepts of cooperative learning we'll use throughout the year; plus, the $10,000 incentive part of the TED video opens up such a great conversation on the nature of motivation. We pair this with Dan Pink's "Drive" RSA Animated video and establish the learning they'll accomplish in the class won't be dependent on grades or points. They're factors, of course, but they start to realize they'll enjoy the class so much more and be far more successful if they aren't the main focus.Mr. Potterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03722161004899250774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036608305984521051.post-58323812892774431732012-02-18T11:14:08.511-08:002012-02-18T11:14:08.511-08:00I've done a similar but simpler challenge usin...I've done a similar but simpler challenge using a single piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper, pair of scissors and 30 cms of masking tape. Most students are able to build towers over 80 cms with these materials and last year some grade 5 students went over 150 cm. Seeing students problem solve, work collaboratively and encourage each other is very rewarding.Grade 4/5 Class at Major Ballacheyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08626001091597738337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036608305984521051.post-35272782223432185672011-11-16T20:19:21.647-08:002011-11-16T20:19:21.647-08:00Great Video Mr. Kaiser! I did the same thing with 7th Graders a month ago, and I videoed them as they made their towers. We had a good time watching their design process after they were all done.

Here's a link for the video for those that are interested:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy54jxC_Z6A

Thanks again for the great post. I always enjoy seeing great projects like this taking place in classrooms across the country (and world).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036608305984521051.post-66261982129566420162011-11-11T22:12:40.421-08:002011-11-11T22:12:40.421-08:00Way to go, Jared! I have to admit it was very uncomfortable for me at first. However, it taught me a lot about myself and the way I approach challenges. I still have a lot to learn. I look forward to reading more about your design course.Ruth L. This is good. Authentic problem solving at its finest. You have them living real life and learning at the same time. I wish I had been a student in your class yesterday.Terry Kaminskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15845242537160632505noreply@blogger.com
